How Instagram comment-to-DM actually works
The public reply, the private reply, and the two Instagram rules that decide whether your DM ever arrives.
Comment-to-DM looks like magic from the outside. It is really two separate calls to Instagram, each with its own rules. Knowing them saves you from wondering why a message did not land.
The public reply
First, Boloza replies underneath the comment itself. This is the part everyone else scrolling the post can see, and it is what makes the whole thing look alive. You give us several wordings and we pick one at random after a short pause — posting the identical sentence within seconds, over and over, is the fastest way to have an account flagged as spam.
The private reply
Second, Instagram lets an app send exactly one direct message in response to a comment. That is the "private reply", and it carries your link. Two limits apply, and neither of them is ours:
- One per comment. If the same person comments your keyword three times, they receive one DM, not three.
- Within seven days. A comment older than that can no longer be replied to privately. Automations on evergreen posts still work; comments that surface from an old Reel a fortnight later do not.
Where the message lands
If the person already follows you, the DM appears in their normal inbox. If they do not, Instagram files it under Requests until they accept. That is worth knowing before you conclude a message was never sent — the activity log will show it as delivered either way.
After the first message
Once somebody replies to you, a standard 24-hour messaging window opens and follow-up messages become possible. Outside that window Instagram stops further messages, which is why the auto-responder answers quickly rather than on a schedule.
